Chapter 1
• The novel begins with the third-person narrator following the protagonist, a boy named Owen, in math class.
• Owen’s teacher, Mr. Barberry, was teaching the class fractions, and Owen was bored—he believed there was nothing more boring than fractions.
• Mr. Barberry called on several students, including one named Bethany, who was not paying attention to the lesson.
• Instead, Bethany was reading a novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, that she had hidden behind her math book.
• Bethany was startled when Mr. Barberry called on her, and Owen noticed something odd: she had chocolate on her chin.
• After class, Owen went to lunch, where he sat and reread the latest Kiel Gnomenfoot book (called Kiel Gnomenfoot and the End of Everything) before the seventh book in the...
