In the novel, there are many citizen’s bodies lying here. The characters spend so much time here, that it hovers over the novel as a major image. It is a desolate, transient thing, full of danger and can be seen as both an actual, physical setting and a mental state.
Black Marks
These are symbols of flu and death. Stu and the others see that Charles’ dead wife and child both have these like bruises on their swollen necks. From this point forward when King mentions that a character has a swollen throat with dark smudges, the reader can be certain that the character has the flu and will not live much longer.
