Did We Cause the Apocalypse?
Examine different explanations for The Stand's apocalypse and compare their allegorical significance. As a class, discuss the hints readers have been given so far about what kind of disaster destroyed civilization. Read through the sections that describe the event and look for clues as to what may have happened. Take note of the after-effects as well, on both society and the environment.
Diary Entry
Have students choose one of the characters and write a diary entry from that character's point-of-view. Students then choose a scene from the book to write their diary entry about. They will need to think about what that character wants and needs in that scene and then show those wants and needs in their writing. This activity requires students to infer what is happening inside a character's mind.
