• In “The Dead of September 11,” her remarks delivered at a Sept. 13, 2001 memorial service held at Princeton University, Toni Morrison speaks directly to those who lost their lives in the terrorist events of September 11, 2001.
• Morrison notes that in order to address the dead she needs a very particular approach--one untainted by preconceptions about governments, politics, and evil.
• She says that she must undertake this task with respect and humility, knowing her words will mean little in the face of such a tragedy.
• Morrison concludes this brief piece by delivering the core of her message to the dead: she wishes she could embrace them...
