Lesson 1 (from "The Sniper")
Objective
Students will learn basic background information on Irish culture.
"The Sniper" takes place in Ireland, during the Irish Civil War. Although the anti-war message of the story is universal, the story is quite condensed and its emotional impact may be lost on students without some background. In a more typical short story, exposition would allow students to know and invest in the characters and their world more thoroughly. The purpose of this lesson is to prepare students to read by offering some of the information that might normally be covered in the story's exposition.
