In this Chapter, Joachim remembers the death of his pony before he was sent off to military school early. This lesson will examine how the death of the horse and Joachim's role in it provides insight into his sense of responsibility.

1) Class Discussion: As a class, discuss the events that led up to the death of Joachim's pony. Was the pony hurt because of natural youthful carelessness or because of genuine disregard for its welfare? Was Joachim genuinely sorry about its death? Why did Joachim's father shoot the pony? Is Joachim a responsible person? Should he have been more responsible as a youth?
2) Partner Discussion: Divide the class into groups of two or three and have the partners discuss the way Joachim's father reacted to the accident with the pony. Was his reaction fair or warranted? Was he more...
