Objective

Chronology/Introduction

Many students are unfamiliar with the genre of non-fiction. Therefore, it is important to discuss it with them and to define it. This lesson will give students a definition of non-fiction and provide a variety of examples.

Lesson

1. Write the word "Non-Fiction" on the board/overhead. Ask students to define it. Work as a group to come up with a working definition; use a dictionary if needed. Make sure students copy it into their notebooks.

2. For small-group work: Divide students into groups of 3-4. Have them create a list of as many types of non-fiction as they can come up with. After 10-15 minutes, have each group give one example. List these on the board/overhead and have students copy it into their notebooks. Have each group give one answer and be sure everyone understands what it is, then move to the next group...
