The In Between
A symbol of entrapment, this realm is literally the Afterlife, or a sort of purgatory that the main character, Maali inhabits after dying and before entering the next realm.
Maali's Box
This object is a symbol of identity. The main character's murder has kept him from fulfilling his dreams and from making lasting change. He is desperate for his friends to find the box, because it feels like an extension of himself.
The Light
A symbol of clarity and revelation, Maali is reluctant to go to this realm throughout the novel, because he is still attached to his life on earth.
Down There
A symbol of life, this realm is the world of the living. Although Maali is dead in the narrative present, he still has visual and aural access to the proceedings occurring here.
