Objective
The objective of this lesson is to understand Maali’s consciousness and how the author teaches the reader to rely upon Maali’s vantage point for guidance into and through the narrative.
Lesson
1. Class Discussion: Throughout the novel, Maali struggles with finding out about himself, where he is, and why he is there. How does the author particularly use Maali’s box of photos in Maali’s life prior to death? Why is Maali so desperate for his friends to recover the photos? What can the reader infer about the photos?
2. Small Group Activity: Assign students to write down why Maali is unsure about what happened to him.
