Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-5)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the beginning of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo in order to identify the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts and themes the novel might contain.
The beginning of the novel introduces the reader to Monique and Evelyn. The reader is introduced to Evelyn’s origins in Hell’s Kitchen and her journey to Hollywood. The reader is also introduced to themes involving identity, ambition, and sexuality. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Evelyn’s conflicts with men and with herself.
