· In Chapter 1, Cal watches the rooks in his yard kill a small animal.
· He has been trying to make friends with the birds by leaving out scraps, but they keep their distance.
· He considers stepping in and putting the animal out of its misery.
· He realizes it would be rude to interfere since he does not know their ways.
· Cal is working on a run-down farm cottage he bought in the remote Western Ireland village of Ardnakelty after moving from Chicago.
· He moved there because he wanted a remote location where he could play his music as loud as he wanted and not have to worry about anyone watching him.
· Even though his mental alarm is turned off, when he is cooking supper, he feels the back...
