Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 - 2)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Rick Riordan’s young adult fantasy novel, The Sea of Monsters. Students will read Chapter 1, identify the book’s genre and narrative style, and research author Rick Riordan and the depictions of satyrs in Greek mythology. The novel sets off with Percy Jackson describing a foreboding dream he has had. The dream focused on his best friend Grover, who is a satyr. As Percy prepares to depart for his last day of school at Meriwether Prep before attending Camp Half-Blood, his mother insinuates there may be trouble at the camp and Percy may not be attending this summer.
