Objective

The objective of this lesson is to have students examine the opening scene of the text to identify and analyze the author's use of literary technique such as imagery. In Part I: The Ghost, Chapter 1, students will discuss the significance of the setting in creating a sense of anticipation and intrigue. Students will establish rules for paranormal investigations. Students will explore the rules and guidelines set by the characters in the text for conducting paranormal investigations.

Class Discussion: How does the author create a sense of suspense and anticipation in the opening scene? Analyze the conversation between Lockwood and Lucy regarding their rules for investigations. What do these rules tell readers about their approach and professionalism?
