1. What are the circumstances of the main characters in Chapter 1? Where are they located and what have they just gone through?

Chapter 1 opens up immediately following the rescue of Thomas, Teresa, and the other Gladers from the Maze. Thomas, Teresa, and the others are being housed in a dormitory, where the previous night they ate pizza and recovered from their last ordeal. Thomas remembers his best friend, Chuck, stabbed in the chest, dying in his arms.

2. What awakens Thomas from his sleep in Chapter 2?

Thomas is awakened by Teresa’s voice and the knowledge that something is indeed wrong. Thomas feels something disappear inside himself. It is Teresa. He realizes she is no longer with him telepathically. All around him, Thomas can hear the screams of the other Gladers, including Frypan, Newt, and Minho, as well as Winston.
