THE PARTY - In the opening of the novel, the reader is introduced to all the characters of the story during one confusing party scene. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the setting of the party and to discuss whether or not this method of introducing all the characters at once is effective.

Lesson

1.) As a class, create a list of characters who were present in the party scene at the opening of the novel. Do you think all these characters will be important throughout the novel? Why or why not?

2.) As a class, compare/contrast the behavior of the women at the party with the behavior of the men. What is the same about their behaviors? What is different? Is there anything surprising in this comparison?
