Lesson 1

Objective: Section 1 "The Rose That Grew from Concrete" is a collection of 100 poems written by the rapper Tupac Shakur between 1989 and 1991, before he became famous. Tupac Amaru Shakur (1971 - 1996), known by his stage names 2Pac and Makaveli, was a rapper, civil rights activist, producer, actor, and poet. Shakur's influences, which arise thematically in this anthology, include the Black Panther Party, Black Nationalism, poverty, egalitarianism, and liberty. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research the life and career of Tupac Shakur.

1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the book and author to the class. Ask the students if they know who Tupac Shakur is, and in what capacity do they know his work?
