Lesson 1 (from Part I (Introduction - Chapter 2))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Brooks' arguments about how character is formed and cultivated. Far from manifesting on its own or by accident, Brooks argues that people who believe they have a moral responsibility to improve themselves in an ethical sense deliberately work on bettering their character every day through concerted and focused effort.

Class Discussion: How can an individual work on bettering her own character, according to Brooks? What areas of the personality and behavior does the effort of betterment often focus on?
