In "The West," Conway described the geography of the Western Plain to create the setting. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the setting.

1) Class Discussion: Where did "The West" take place? Where in Australia is New South Wales? What did the plains look like before the settlers arrived? What types of plants grew in this area? What types of animals lived here? Why weren't there many aborigines in this area? How was the land described? What types of emotions were tied to the land? How was the desert described? How was the water described?
2) Think-Pair-Share: Students will respond to the following: What seems to be the most important feature of the setting of New South Wales? What did this mean for the people who chose to settle there? Students will share their answers with partners and then combine their answers into one. Pairs...
