Silas Lapham gets into the paint business when his father discovers a mineral paint mine on the family farm in Vermont. The father tries unsuccessfully to market the paint all his life and Lapham buys a hotel after fighting in the Civil War. When Lapham paints the tavern of the hotel with the paint, his wife is so impressed with it he has it analyzed and tested and discovers that its chemical composition allows it to withstand fire, water, and acids without damage. After that, Lapham begins to market his paint and becomes highly successful and very wealthy as a result.
