Lesson 1 (from Pages 3-48)
Objective
Students will examine Sexton’s use of literary devices within The Revisioners in order to study the way in which similes and other literary devices aid the reader's understanding of events and characterizations present within a literary work.
In one of many instances when Margaret Wilkerson Sexton uses a literary device in order to hint at a particular character’s traits, she describes Ava and King’s photograph of Miss Josephine and notes “a smokehouse with shingles planked toward the roof like hands in prayer” (4). Soon, the reader will learn just how important Josephine’s religious faith has been to her throughout her life. By finding and analyzing the effects of particular literary devices uses in the text, students will examine the ways in which literary devices can be used to create vivid and engaging writing.
