Lesson 1 (from Prologue – Chapter 3)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Brandon Hobson’s novel The Removed. Students will research the author, read the Prologue, and analyze the exposition established in this opening scene. The Removed is a tragic and beautiful novel exploring the themes of grief, family, community, racism, drug addiction, and alienation. Steeped in Native American folklore and spirituality, a family struggles to come to terms with the death of 15-year-old Ray-Ray Echota, 15 years after he was killed by a policeman.
Lesson
Group Activity: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the Prologue and discuss what has been related to the reader. How old is Ray-Ray? What is his personality like? Who are his siblings? What is indicated about Ray-Ray’s death the following day?
