These chapters introduces the conflict that will propel the plot of the novel. In Chapter 1, the reader follows Dr. Whittlesey's final moments on the tepui. This objective will focus on life or death decisions.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Dr. Whittlesey has remained behind while the rest of his expedition has decided to return home. Why has Dr. Whittlesey stayed? Was this a smart decision? Why did the others leave? Should Whittlesey have gone with them? Is Whittlesey correct in thinking this other group are leaving too soon?
