Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "The Red Wheelbarrow," Lines 1-8)
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to discover the relationship between Imagism and Objectivism and to analyze how these philosophies are manifested in "The Red Wheelbarrow." Imagism strongly influenced Williams's work, as did Objectivism, a philosophy that he helped to create. "The Red Wheelbarrow" is a clear example in its dedicated focus on three images, precise structure, and lack of obvious subjective assignment of meaning. This lesson introduces students to these literary philosophies, asks them to read "The Red Wheelbarrow," and then asks them to apply the philosophies to their reading.
