Objective
The students will understand the setting of this story.
The story takes place in an orphanage in Kentucky. The author gives clues to let the reader know it is in modern times, as there are cars and cameras.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Have the students answer the following questions: What is the setting of the story? When, approximately, is the time period? What clues in the story lead you to this approximation? How does the setting help see the tone of the book?
Small Group Activity: Have the students split into small groups and answer the following questions: What does the reader know about Beth’s home, based on the description that is given? What can be learned about Beth from this description? How does her living situation prior to her mother’s death help to explain why she ends up in the orphanage?
