World War I Battle

Have the students research a World War I battle in which Irish soldiers fought. They should then share their findings with the class in a short presentation. Besides the dates, location, purpose, and outcome of the battles, they should include how the battles they have chosen would have affected the characters in this novel.

Transportation in 1918

Have the students research and present in a one-page report the types of transportation available in 1918. For example, Julia rides a bike and also takes a tram to work. The students should then compare forms of transportation in 1918 to ways we travel today. They should answer the following questions: How have the ways people travel changed in the last 100 years? In what ways has travel not changed? How does the ability to and ease of travel influence where people go and how often they travel?
