• The narrator would bike all the way to the hospital except that the Matron disapproved of her nurses arriving sweaty; therefore, she biked most of the way and then would catch a tram for the last leg of her commute.
• On her walk to the tram, she continued to describe what she passed including a makeshift war memorial, remembering just a few of the tens of thousands of lost Irishmen; this memorial reminded her of her brother, who she had left at home.
• The narrator told the reader she would turn 30 the next day.
