Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

Knowing more about Muriel Spark, the author of "Her Public Image," will enrich our reading, because she is a most interesting and accomplished woman. She has an unusual background and her resume defies any set pattern of work. This might upset a head hunter, but as readers, it will just make us wonder more about the story line and the characters. The objective of this lesson is try to match her background with the characters she creates.

Discuss the background of Muriel Spark. Try to relate what she has done to what she writes. What sort of person does she seem to be? Remember that stories often come from life experience. She seems to be a strong woman. If you agree, how do you think that quality will affect her characters? Dig into her accomplishments and try to create a three dimensional image...
