Through the house and the open spaces around it, the Professor becomes a full character as the author highlights the important elements of his life: his work, his garden, and his family. The objective of this lesson is to explore the idea of the house and the spaces surrounding it, such as the garden, as a character in the novel, complete with its own personality. The Professor cannot leave behind the house because, without it, and the memories it possesses of his family, he would not be able to work.
