Dictionary Entry from Memory
Give each student a reasonably well-known word and ask them all to write down as many meanings, with examples of usage, as they can think of for that word using only their own knowledge. Then, have them compare their entry with that for the same word in the Oxford English Dictionary.
Story Based on a Dictionary Entry
In the same vein as the author starting the text with a dictionary entry, have students write a two-page story (fiction or non-fiction) that also begins with a dictionary entry for an appropriate word.
