Lesson
1. Class discussion: "The Unconscious As Gold Mine" assumes that many poets are unable to tap into the unconscious as a source of images and ideas. Discuss the difference between the conscious and the unconscious. How do you think the unconscious affects the work of a poet? Give examples of ideas that might be found in the unconscious rather than the conscious. Are these ideas were appropriate for profound for use in poetry?
2. Have students make a list of at least 20 ideas or images that may be found in the unconscious. Split students into small groups so that they may compare their lists. Discuss the lists, including comparisons, as a class.
