Lesson 1 (from Chapters I - III)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to better understand the setting of the story. The Power of the Dog starts off in the year 1924 in, what some characters call, the Wild West. Throughout this first section of the story, the narrator describes in detail the cattle ranches and surrounding vast land, the small windy town of Beech, and the recent increase in automobiles.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Have the students answer the following questions: What is the setting of the story? What descriptive language does the author use to describe the location and time period? How does the author use the narrator to help immerse the reader in the setting?

Small Group Activity: Split the students up into small groups and have them choose an aspect of the setting on which to focus. They should answer the following questions: What aspect of the setting have you chosen...
