Objective
In this lesson, the students will explore the novel's frame narrative.
Naomi Alderman's novel is structured so that the stories within the story create a unified tale.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What is a frame narrative? How does this literary technique work? How does Neil's storyline set up the rest of the novel? In what ways does the story within a story work to set up a cohesive tale?
Journal Activity: Write an entry detailing the impact of the historical information being tucked in between the character's narratives. Does this create a cohesive tale?
Small Group Activity: Neil's timeline and the Book of Eve come together to bookend the novel. Work with your group to decide how many stories exist within the story. Make a web depicting the varied storylines.
