The main character of "The Possibility of Evil" is Adela Strangeworth. She is 71 years old and has lived in the town all of her life--in fact, she has never been away for more than a single day. She is one of the wealthiest people in town and is preoccupied with status, comfort, and appearances. She appears friendly, but she is secretly convinced that everyone around her is evil and she sends "poison pen" letters accusing people of terrible things.
