"The Lovely Leave" is a story of contradictions. Mimi wants everything to be perfect for her husband's leave, but when the leave is canceled and all of her planning goes to waste, she falls into a pattern of anger, guilt, and resentment that threatens to ruin this visit. In this lesson, the students will analyze Mimi's contradictory behavior and what it reveals about Parker's perspective on relationships.
Lesson
1. Individual: Have students read the short story "The Lovely Leave," and ask them to make note of the changes in Mimi's mood or attitude. (You might suggest that they annotate in the margins. They might use notes such as A for anger, H for happiness, or G for guilt.)
2. Groups: Divide the class into groups of three or four, and ask each group to share their observations about Mimi's changes in mood. What seems to trigger...
