An epic poem is a lengthy narrative poem containing details of heroic deeds and events significant to a culture or nationality. Epic poetry is meant to be dramatic, so it often includes exaggeration and over-the-top descriptions. "The Poem of the Cid" can be considered epic poetry. The objective of this lesson is to learn about epic poetry by identifying poetic elements found in "The Poem of the Cid."
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: What is epic poetry? What are some of its characteristics? What is "The Poem of the Cid?" Is it an epic poem? How do you know? How do you think the elements of epic poetry will develop throughout the poem?
2) Groups: Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have the students identify specific examples of elements of epic poetry in Sections 1-18 of "The Poem of the Cid."
