Objective
Characters are at the heart of “The Phantom of the Opera,” as all of the action stems from the various personalities and experiences of the major actors. Help your students to understand characterization with discussion and activities.
Lesson
Class discussion: How can writers create characters? What are the means through which we understand characters? Is a character created through dialogue? Action? Narration? How is fictional characterization different in writing than in other mediums? Are the Phantom’s characters believable? If so, why? If not, why not?
Activity: In small groups, students should brainstorm together to pick one character from another work, perhaps one studied in class, who resembles The Phantom, and to highlight the ways in which these characters are similar or different.
