Immediately, it is clear that there are wild differences in the levels of available technology in the places discussed in the book. Some characters fly in near space aircraft, while others make use of horse drawn carts. This disparity points to dramatic events in the recent past and towards future themes and events. This lesson is about different technology levels. Students should understand some of the possible causes of these disparities and what they mean for the story.
