Objective
Students will meticulously analyze the many different elements of the cover art included with the narrative of The Outsider order to deepen their understanding of the connection between the work's themes and the cover art that is chosen by King to underscore these themes.
Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the vivid artwork featured on the cover of The Outsider provides an excellent opportunity to teach students skills in visual literacy. One edition of the novel depicts the upside-down image of a shadowy and sinister figure standing in foliage nearly waist-high. The figure stares out at the reader with red, glowing eyes. In this way, the cover suggests themes such as evil intentions, the presence of the paranormal, and the power of camouflage before the reader has even reached the first page of the narrative.
