Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine how Wes reveals the backstory of his and Moore's lives and how flashbacks are used in Chapter 1. Wes shares information about his family and Moore's family to help readers understand who they are. Flashbacks are used to tell the backstory.

Class Discussion: What information is presented about first Wes and then Moore in Chapter 1? In what way is the entire chapter a flashback to earlier years in Wes's and Moore's lives? Why are the flashbacks necessary? How do they provide insight into the type of upbringing the men had and how that upbringing affected their lives and the choices they made? How would you describe the way that flashbacks are used in Chapter 1?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss how Wes uses flashbacks in the introduction. How does Wes share the way...
