Objective
As the author of "The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs" Patricia McConnell is an applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer who relates her own experiences with dogs to teach humans how to communicate with them. Lesson #1 will examine the point of view of the book and McConnell's intended audience.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: Why do you think McConnell chose the first person point of view for the book? How does using the first person, or "I," rather than the third person "She" affect the story itself? Is she a likable narrator?
2) Class Activity: Chart some of McConnell's personal anecdotes and discuss her intended audience. Is it the same audience she addresses in the opening of her book? Is this book primarily intended for prospective pet owners?
3) Group Activity: In groups, share your own experiences with animals. Can you relate...
