The Millionaire's Hothouse
"The Orchid Thief" is a non-fiction book by American journalist and author Susan Orlean about the world of orchid growing, collecting, and obsession. The book is based on an earlier article that Orlean wrote for The New Yorker magazine which describes the story of a man named John Laroche and three Seminole Indians who were accused of stealing orchids from the Fakahatchee Strand in Florida. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research its author, Susan Orlean.
