Lesson 1 (from Paragraphs 1-2)
Objective
Students will investigate LeGuin’s purpose in using an allusion to William James in the subtitle for her story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" and will make predictions about the allusion’s possible connections to the themes of the upcoming text.
Just below the title of LeGuin's story, she places a subtitle. The subtitle states in parentheses: "(Variations on a theme by William James)" (1). William James was a philosopher who wrote about the idea behind LeGuin's depiction of Omelas. When she read James's work, she did not realize that the same concept had previously been used within The Brothers Karamazof as well, though she had read the book as a young woman. Clearly, an examination of the subtitle LeGuin chooses to include will lead students to a deeper understanding of the story's messages and themes.
