Lesson 1 (from Just Ivan (pages 1-22))
Objective
Each story has a main character, occasionally two. We often view main characters as the heroes of a story. Another word for the main character is the protagonist. Minor characters support the main character by conversing and interacting with the main character in the story. Students will discuss the differences between main characters and minor characters, and begin the construction of a book cover that will be used throughout the unit.
Lesson
1. Using brown craft paper or a paper grocery bag, have students cut a rectangle large enough to create a book cover for their copies of The One and Only Ivan. Remind them to not tape the cover to the book itself, but fold the edges of the rectangle over the front and back covers to create a book jacket. Tape only the top and bottom of the folds, not the book itself.
