Just Ivan (pages 1-22)

Ivan is a gorilla, but not just any ordinary gorilla. Ivan is an artist. He is also the narrator of his own story. As a young gorilla, Ivan was sent to live at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. He lives in a habitat made of cement and glass and feels fortunate to have a view of the mall, the parking lot, and a billboard. The billboard advertises the circus-themed mall with pictures of an elephant, a clown and an angry gorilla. Ivan feels that the sign misrepresents his kind. He is not an angry gorilla. As a matter of fact, Ivan points out that anger is only used among silverbacks to maintain order within their troops or warn of impending danger.
