Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

In the novel, some characters are more thoroughly described than others. Who are some characters that are merely named in passing or have a minor role in the novel? What is the importance of these flat characters to the story line? In what way do these characters make the main characters more colorful or interesting? When there is conflict, what type of role do these flat characters play?

Essay Topic 2

Conflicts between characters are often caused by a problem. What are some conflicts that occur in the novel? Are the conflicts in the book mostly man vs. man, man vs. nature, or man vs. self? Are they internal or external conflicts?

Essay Topic 3

A narrator of a story can be trustworthy or untrustworthy. What does Bob share with readers about himself? Does Bob tell readers exactly what he is like even if the information he shares is unflattering or reveals bad character traits? Does he try to hide his true self?
