Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the book. Namwali Serpell is a Zambian-American writer and English professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of The Old Drift? When was the book published? What was the book's intended audience? How was the book received by the public? Did it win any awards? What else has the author written?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information that impacts the novel's themes and characters. Regroup and ask students to share their facts. Write a list on the board so it is visible to all students.
