Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the impact of Lyssa's mother's death on Lyssa's life in the story Happily Ever After. Lyssa's mother had advanced ovarian cancer, and Lyssa always felt as if her mother did not receive the best possible medical care and treatment due to the fact that she was a Black woman. Lyssa's doctor has also told Lyssa that she should cut her risk of getting the same cancer by having her own ovaries removed, a decision Lyssa has been putting off because she thought she would like to still have the option of possibly having children someday. Lyssa's mother's illness represented a double trauma in Lyssa's life.
