Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel.
Donna Freitas is the author of The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano. She is a writer and professor, with a PhD in religion from the Catholic University of America. Much of her academic work, writing, and research focuses on religion, sex, consent, and feminism across college campuses. As a professor herself, the protagonist Rose struggles between choosing to have children with her husband, Luke, or focusing on her career and personal life. The objective of this lesson is to explore how Freitas’s background and scholarly pursuits shape the story, characters, and conflicts readers face in the early chapters of the novel.
