Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-4)
Objective
The Nightingale, by Kristin Hannah, is an historical novel set largely in France during the Nazi Occupation of World War II. Two sisters, years apart in age, differ in their approach to the war. Young Isabelle wishes to resist German rule at any cost while older Vianne seeks to survive and protect her family. This lesson introduces students to the author and novel, as well as researching the setting and analysis of the narrative style of Chapter 1.
Lesson
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read Chapter 1 of The Nightingale. Chapter 1 begins on the Oregon Coast in 1995 with an unnamed older woman reflecting on the difference between her generation and the present day younger generations. As a group, collaborate in developing a presentation that illustrates and analyzes the setting of Chapter 1. Where does the elderly woman live? How is her attic...
