Objective

The first line of the novel The Nickel Boys is a perplexing and enigmatic one, inspiring great curiosity and engagement within the mind of its reader. The narrator states, “Elwood received the best gift of his life on Christmas Day 1962, even if the ideas it put into his head were his undoing” (9). An investigation of the novel's first line and of the famous lines of other novels in the literary canon will deepen students' understanding of the importance of a novel's first line.
